- Hey There South Texas Giggers and Anglers!!!
It's been wet, cold and windy, doesn't add up to good gigging or
even fishing opportunities around here, in fact....but this week
promises to be very nice. I am already feeling a little bit of
spring in the air as we approach February. So, I will have to
base my report on just 2 trips this first 2 weeks of January, the
weather has just made it really tough. First trip, we went south to
my winter time grounds and found Sheepshead, a few Drum in the 20-24
inch range and some small flounder about 6 or so and the largest was
16 inch. We were so cold that we came in after just 2 hours but, we
did have around 20 fish total. Some good fillets came off those
sheep and drum! Second trip, was a little warmer weather ,we
slammed 20 sheephead in an hour, then we chased a school of good
size drum and ended up with 8 all real nice around 24 inch, but they
stayed in 2 to 3 foot of water in that full moon and they were hard
for my customers to gig. We rounded that night off with 8 flounder
and they were all small but fat! All this in about 3 and a half hrs!
took me longer to clean then to make this catch .a great catch that
weighed in around 150 lbs.Total fish count was 34 fish!
I have some days open still, but we will have to work around the
weather a while longer, Fish on Friends!

Catching is still great. Reds are in
the flats eating piggy and pin perch. the fish are in the upper end
of the slot with some oversize mixed in. Trout are still hitting
live croaker and soft plastics are working well too. The frontal
systems have begun and the water is cooling down. The next two weeks
should be good to go BUT I don't think I would want to be a

INTERESTED IN HUNTING?
Call Capt. Brent Hopkins:
Update: January thru February
My duck hunting trips have been pretty
good overall with a good mixed bag of birds most days. Some days
have been tougher than others, but we're still having some good
quality duck hunts. We're not quite killing limits every day, but
we've been able to get most of our bag limits. Average morning hunts
have been consisting around 10-20 birds in the bag. I still have
some open dates yet to book if you're looking to get in on some duck
hunting. Call me or shoot me an email and we'll see what we can get
worked out. I also run afternoon hunts as well if you prefer.
I took some time off during our duck season split (Nov 30 - Dec 13)
so I haven't been fishing all that much except for the last week
since our duck season re-opened. Catching was a little bit tough a
couple of days, but the other days I've spent fishing has been
limits of reds as usual for me. Anchor fishing from the boat using
mullet, or wading with plastics has been most productive for me. The
only thing I can complain about is the lack of wind we've been
having around here lately.
This will be my last fishing report for the year, and I will not be
posting another report until around mid March 2015 or so. After duck
season ends on January 25th, I will be going right into my hog &
javelina hunts that I run & sell over a good part of the state. If
you're interested in getting in on a fun relaxing kind of hunt, give
me a shout and I'm sure we can work you in somehow or another. I
offer un-limited hogs & varmints, hunting at night, along with a
javelina if you're in the market for this kind of hunt.

the flounder gigging has slowed down quite a bit since late
December. Right now the flounder are averaging 3/4 of a pound to a
pound and half. Most of the big fish have moved out to the Gulf, and
will make their return for the Spring Flounder Run. There are lots
of small fish, all under 10 inches - which means good things for the
summer time action. We should expect the Spring Flounder Run to
begin by late February/early March. March and April produce some of
the best flounder gigging in the Coastal Bend. There will be LOTS OF
FISH, nice weather and clear water.

MORE BIG FISH GUIDE SERVICE
Fish the bays and flats surrounding Aransas Pass, Port Aransas,
Rockport, and Corpus Christi with Capt. Ron.
Our area is home to some of the most fertile fishing grounds found on
the Texas Gulf Coast.
Whether your desire is fishing for trophy speckled trout, monster bull
redfish, wade fishing, fly fishing, or fishing with artificial lures,
Capt. Ron can take care of everything for your next fishing trip.
Fishing is still off and on according to the tide level and water
temperature. Were catching reds on the drop-offs when the tide is low
and on the flats during the high tide. When its in between is when the
fishing is slow.. Were getting lots of trout along the ICW when the
water is cold enough. Some of those days are better than others and
there are also lots of undersize trout mixed in with the keepers. Soft
plastics have been the best bait for the trout. Pumpkinseed with
chartreuse tail has been the best producer. Were catching reds on
lures as well but live shrimp has been a better choice for them. Were
also getting some black drum in the channels and deeper holes but not
as many as normal for this time of year. Fishing is always good in the
winter so plan your trip soon and give me a call 361-774-3817.

Cold water temperatures and drizzling weather has not stopped the
Redfish they are still amazingly up very shallow and still feeding.
We have had some tougher conditions on the water this January but
still catching some nice reds for those willing to brave the
conditions. Warming trend is fast approaching and I am looking
forward to spring fishing. We or going to have a great year
contributed by much needed rainfall, the opening of Cedar Bayou and
the increase in bait in our bays last summer. Reds have been eating
dead shrimp and cut mullet they have been in the shallow flats in
the afternoon getting some sun. Look for mud sturs and active
nervous mullet. Trout have been holding in the deeper flats and also
around oyster it's best to drift with soft plastics for the trout.
Water has been clear so I have been working more natural color's but
pink devil eye's have been working also catching a few nice ones
with top water's but soft plastics will get you better results.
Finding drum in there usual areas deeper guts adjacent to channels
and holding up on oyster reefs. Best bait for the black drum has
been fish bites or shrimp. Making Family Memories To Last A

everybody. I took the opportunity to do some fishing for myself January
14th . I fished water that was around 8ft deep. I was casting Berkley Gulp
soft plastics with a 1/16oz jig head. The fish are deep due to fairly cold
water temps. I worked the plastic slow and bouncing it up off the bottom.
Remember the fish don't want to expend much energy to get their prey ; so
keep your retrieve slow. I also fished with shrimp to catch redfish and
black drum. I never moved the boat more than 100ft and had really good

Hey Folks, sorry its been a
while, we have been picking up decent numbers of Black
Drum schooling up along shorelines and still finding some Redfish
and an occasional Flounder on the flats near deeper water guts on
cuts. We have been getting the drum on shrimp.
Keep in mind that Redfish tend to stay up on the flats year round. I still

SPECIALIZING IN TROPHY
REDFISH, SPECKLED TROUT & BLACK DRUM
January is one of the hard to predict months along the coast. The
only thing we are sure of is it will generally be cold, windy, and
rain or drizzle. Trout and redfish can still be found if you work at
it. Wading for that trophy trout of a lifetime is something many
anglers strive for in January and February, and they are often
rewarded while working a corky or soft plastic in waist deep water.
Several of the bait stands in Rockport have live shrimp and it is a
strong producer under a popping cork right now. Concentrate on the
drains from the back lakes, muddy bottoms near shoalgrass, and shell
banks near mud. Be careful if your going out and always have a plan,
especially if your going alone. In the cold months you might
consider wearing an inflatable PFD. I myself have stepped off into a
drum hole and filled my waders up, and the added cold water shock
can put a normally healthy person into hypothermia mode rapidly,
especially if your 100-200 yards away from the safety of your boat.
There have already been several wading, kayaking and even boating
accidents in our local waters which have resulted in search and
rescue missions since December. Also anglers that go out to brave
the cold and damp weather should carry a spare set of clothes and a
towel in a sealed dry bag. More than once that has made what would
have been a miserable trip back to the boat ramp into a comfortable
and warm ride home.
Until next month, keep what you can use and release the rest to
fight another day. God Bless,
Give me THE OPPORTUNITY
TO SHOW YOU WHAT I MEAN.
