Family Fishing Fun!
by Capt. Sam Schiwart
Schools out! It’s Summer vacation time! What better way to spend some quality time with your family than getting outside and putting down the electronic devices and going on a fishing trip?! When was the last you cast a rod and reel? Or reeled in a fighting fish? Or went on a boat ride? Or watched the sun rise while the boat lightly rocks?! So what are you waiting for?! Let go have a good time!
As Summertime makes its appearance, fishing keeps on getting better and better! The winds should start to die down a little bit to where the bay waters will remain a beautiful trout green color. Clam winds lead to cleaner waters which allow us to cover more water, fishing and dodging the boat traffic which will pick up with the arrival of summer. Pleasant temperatures and a gentle breeze make for some great days in the water!
Summer trout fishing is on fire right now! My customers are catching thier limit of trout 9 out of 10 trips!  There are the occasional slow days where bite is tough but that’s when we grind it out to catch fish!  The croaker and Piggy perch bite is on and is productive over shell and mud, producing fish in sand pockets and grass. Having good fresh active croaker or piggies is key. If you they wiggle or it doesn’t try to swim to the bottom when you put in, it’s time for a new one. Make sure and work your baits up off the bottom in order to keep them presented in the feeding zone of the trout. Topwater and plastic baits have been working when fished in the same area.
Redfishing has been good as well yet not quite as productive as trout fishing. While redfishing, fish cut bait on the bottom in sand pockets or against wind blown shorelines. Cut mullet and cut shad have been doing the trick! Again, fresh bait is key here! But keep in mind that the primary targeted species during summer is trout where more focus is placed on redfishing during the spring and summer!
So who is ready to go spend a great day on the and catch some fish?! Summer dates are filling up so don’t wait….give us a call and get the days you want booked! We can accommodate all sizes of groups and everyone from the young beginner to old pro! All of my customers get a discount on their room rates when they stay at the Lighthouse Inn in Rockport, TX! Just let them know you are my customers when booking! So don’t wait…let’s go fishing!!!
